Today the children worked really hard adding soil improver to a number of raised beds in the polytunnel, outside and in the Access Garden. Some children helped with the chickens whilst others potted on tomatoes and peppers. We did some watering and used our comfrey tea as a feed.
Our ‘Salad Bar’ is growing and our broad beans are larger and flowering. We won’t have Farm Club for quite a few weeks due to Y5 residential, holiday and a Training Day; there will be big changes the next time we get together!

Our community gardeners have been working very hard building new raised beds on their plots and they have filled them with compost and soil improver kindly donated by Yorkshire Water. They are likely to have more outdoor success with these beds that are weed free and likely to drain much better than our clay soil.

We went up to the poly tunnel on Friday afternoon to see how our beans are doing. The children were really surprised to find that some plants already had flowers. We need to talk to someone on the farm to see what has happened to them and find out if it is normal for them to have flowers at this stage, or can anyone help and leave a comment on this blog entry? The children are enjoying asking questions and working out how we can find the answers – they are really thinking scientifically! Unfortunately, some of the bean plants were in a bit of a sorry state! Some mini beasts have definitely had a good dinner and some plants had been chomped right down to the stalk – a few had disappeared altogether. We will keep you updated on their progress.
